Theme.
IRSA International Institute 2015 will start its program by conducting a one-day training on Impact Evaluation Methods.

Participants.
We welcome any academics, policy-makers and student to apply participating in this training. Priority will be given to Indonesian participants who will attend the 5th IRSA International Institute.

The training is a one-day program, and the detail is as follows:

PARALLEL SESSIONS

PRESENTATION TECHNOLOGY

Computer (MS Windows environment), infocus/projector and also pointer will be available in each room for presentations. Please use either PowerPoint (.ppt or .pptx) or Portable Document Format (.pdf) for presentations. Presenters are requested to bring their presentation on a USB disk. Connecting personal laptops is discouraged to avoid excessive loss of time. There will be also a parallel room assistant that will help you during your sessions.

DURATION

Each parallel session for paper presentations will present 4 papers in total 2 hours. For each paper there will be 30 minutes max (15-20 minutes of presentation, 10-15 minutes for questions and answer from the floor).

CHAIRS

Chairs are expected to come to the room 10 minutes prior to the start of the session. His/her role is to introduce the sessions and the presenters; to guide the discussion; and to make sure that the time is divided equally over the papers to be presented and discusses. Although some exceptions may occur, the chair will be usually the same person as the presenter of the last paper in the session. In case the scheduled chair does not attend, the general rule is that presenter of the session's actual last paper is expected to take the role of chair.

POSTER SESSION

Posters' presenters are expected to stay nearby their posters during the poster sessions in order to answer the questions from the conference participants may have. Poster will be display during the conference in the conference area.

‘Big Data’ for Economics Research? Opportunities and Challenges

Date: August 2^nd, 2015 9am – 4pm

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Data are essential – without high quality data providing the right information on the right things at the right time, it is impossible for policy makers to make sound economic and social policy decisions. Two decades ago, economists had only a few main sources of data – relying mainly on household surveys and official statistics. In recent years, there has been a shift towards using ‘big data’ in economics. What is big data exactly? Why is it becoming important? Why does it matter? Does it have a future in economic analysis? What is the future of traditional data sources in ‘big data’ world? Is this a threat or blessing for the traditional social scientific method? While some insist that big data may provide an opportunity to leapfrog statistical systems in developing countries and transform how policy makers and business leaders make decisions, others argue that big data is largely a big hype. This workshop will provide a forum for the discussion about the data revolution in economics research. This workshop will also bring together experts who have used big data as well as traditional data sources (e.g. household surveys) and they will provide empirical applications using these data in the workshop. This workshop will also include a panel discussion of how can academics reach out their research beyond the academic circles and achieve greater policy impacts.

Confirmed speakers include: Professor John Gibson (University of Waikato, New Zealand), Indira Hapsari, MCommerce (World Bank, Jakarta), Dr Jong Gun Lee (UN Global Pulse Lab, Jakarta), Dr Susan Olivia (Monash University, Australia), Teguh Pramono, MA (Director of Welfare Statistics, Statistics Indonesia, BPS), Dr Elan Satriawan (TNP2K and University of Gadjah Mada), Dr Firman Witoelar (Survey Meter), Dr Vivi Yulaswati (Indonesian National Development Agency, Bappenas).
